The Sword

8m high steel art structure that was designed and fabricated by WBD. The entire structure comprised of 14 tonnes of steel. The unique structure was carefully analysed to understand its dynamics. It was modelled in its entirety to understand the centre of gravity and applied forces and stresses for its unconventional free-standing shape. The hilt was completed using two layers of curved steel with plates welded in a truss formation to provide rigidity. The structure was designed in separate sections to be assembled on site as access to the site located at Tower Bridge was limited.
